About Us

Aknoon Architecture Atelier was founded by Mahmood Omidbakhsh, in Shiraz, in 2001, with an emphasis on design and construction processes, inspired by Geography, material and indigenous techniques, while considering "economics" in its broad sense.
In 2006, and after a few years of research and performing more than 100 projects with various functions and scales, participating in several architectural competitions, and later by joining Atefeh Moharreri to Aknoon, we intensified our research and inquiry for finding the way we were looking for. And the apparently general concept of "contemporary" and "present" and its definition in Aknoon Architecture Atelier, became the basis for carrying out our future projects.
What we are looking for, is contemporaneity. We utilize local and traditional materials by using new techniques, what is seen in "House of Walls" project of 2009.
In 2010, in "walnut skin house" project, through surfacing of local clay brick and in the form of reconstructing an abandoned villa, we achieved a significant quality of redefining the brick in a contemporary residential project. And we continued this process of "surfacing, instauration, and revival" of traditional and everyday materials to our current projects including "Lemon Café" in 2015.

Design and construction of "House of Astaneh" in 2011, with a totally exposed concrete structure and a suspended doubled layer view made of wood and metal, was a great achievement in utilizing and localization of modern architectural patterns. In this project we tried to achieve a high degree of aesthetics and at the same time considered the visual, local an economic requirements.
At the same time we carried out another project with the name "a cocoon under the ground". The challenge was the interior design of a basement in order to be used as a residential unit. During this unique project we learnt how to work with a uniform structure of wooden materials, as well as the folding technique. This project won the second rank of the 6th Iranian Interior Design Award.
Using pilot system in "House of Brothers" project, while considering specifications of the land, including the slope and view, we reached a better understanding of the features of this method as well as using light and different materials. And in the 14th round of the Architect's Award, this project reached to the final stage of the competition and became the finalist.
Aknoon Architecture Atelier once again in 2014, by joining Hooman Karampour to the group, expanded its domain of influence and activity, to urban layout and design. Aknoon Architectural Atelier, relying on its previous studies and researches and by designing several important urban projects, including Ghasr-e-Dasht and Afif Abad Streets, and Ghavam-al-Din Square, proved its serious presence in the field of urban design. It also developed a new approach in the city by focusing on the idea of low-impact development and the platform design.
In 2017, in our project "House Number 5", we decided to create motion in the space, we tried to create a feeling of being in a fluid and mysterious space in a weekend house, without using any additional decorations or imposed functions. In addition to that, by using wide transparent surfaces, while avoiding local difficulties, we redefined the skies in the subject of the house. This project became a finalist in the 16th round of Architect.
Despite having a brilliant background in carrying out great residential complexes, the two "Sayeh" and "Ivan" projects in 2017, in Shiraz and Ahwaz, presented our ideas in a greater and wider scale. Enjoying the poetic game of bricks in the project "Sayeh", and redefining the subject of Ivan in the "Ivan" project, developed our approach toward large scale projects.
After holding "Afif-Abad event" and establishing the campaign of "Urban Events of Shiraz" by Aknoon Architecture Atelier, aimed at developing and promoting the citizens' and authorities' looks toward the subject of activity and event in the framework of urban design, and going beyond merely physical viewpoints, the relationship between the municipality, as the local government and Aknoon Architecture Atelier, as the core for generating ideas was consolidated from one hand, and its linkage with the citizens and art custodians were also enhanced from another hand.
In a near future "Aknoon Architecture Atelier" is aimed at paving the way for entering the field of intelligent prefabricated and trying to create an educational platform for playing a decent role in building the future of Shiraz, and in a larger scale, the future of Iran and the region.
Now RBTA and Aknoon Architecture Atelier, Using international intellectual and empirical support and local and indigenous ideas and interactions, stand together to advance the architectural and urban horizons of this soil. We still are looking for presenting creative and high quality architectural solutions consistent with our culture and background and urban design ideas based on low impact development patterns. And to do this with the cooperation of creative architects and urban designers and other artists in the fields of painting, sculpture, music, photography, etc., we provide the grounds for production of multimedia ideas and contents, especially in urban projects with an emphasis on the activity system and paving the way with support of architectural qualities.
